Photoshop/Lightroom/Elements Tip #2

Need help getting your composition right?

Photoshop and Lightroom

Elements

This simple tip will help you with your composition when working in Photoshop and it will also work in Elements and Lightroom

We all know about the rule of thirds - but did you know there are many other composition guides and these may suit your image better than the rule of thirds.

  1. Rule of Thirds

  2. Diagonal

  3. Triangle

  4. Golden Ratio

  5. Golden Spiral

But where are they and how do I use them?

  1. Place an image into the editing space

  2. Open the crop tool

  3. In elements and photoshop you need to click on the image to open up the crop tool guidance lanes. In Lightroom you do not need to do this

  4. press the o button which will then cycle you though all the composition overlays

  5. Some of these have an "orientation and to change the orientation of the overlay simply hold down the shit key and press o

  6. When you have the overlay that works best you can then use this template to crop you image such that the key items of the image align with the guide line and intersection points.

Your image is now cropped in line with recognised composition guidlines
