We are all judges of photography even if we don't undertake the role of a photographic judge. We do this analysis of our own work and of all the images we look at - but is there anything that we do that we don't know we are doing and what do those who judge formally do??
I know when I judge at clubs I go through the images very quickly and in doing this some register instantly which gives me a first ranking.
I then go back through and look for annoying elements or technical glitches which give me my second ranking.
Next does it have a story a mood a narrative a "point to it" Then where does the composition take my eye - am I taken through the image to a key aspect or do my eyes wander round aimlessly
Then my final aspect is if the picture is balanced - something that's hard to explain but if its not "balanced " it just doesn't feel right
My last and most important of all is which is the image I wish I had taken that. Lets take a look at what some others have to say on this subject.
