Anatomy of a Shot (disassembling the process) Camera Club Talk Overview

Ian Howard

Interested in finding out more about this talk - well here's an overview to outline the aims and the content it offers. This is a relatively new talk and it is built around the amazing response to the before and after section in other talks where I take a raw image and show the process of getting it to its final version coupled with composition analysis of the images.

In Anatomy of a Shot (disassembling the process) Camera Club Talk Overview I will take 13 images from concept to final image, I Will explore the details of the process via the analysis of the issues with the original image, to compositional strengths of the final image. Those attending talks are always engaged with the explanations of the images in these before and after sections as it not often explored in other talks.

This is not a standard Camera Club talk in that it actively encourages:- opinions, - engagement, - discussion and based on my experience club members have a lot of opinions they are keen to discuss.

Duration can be from 90min to 2 hours all depending on the group size and the length of your meetings.

So whats the key Aim: This was put together with the aim of getting photographers to think more about their composition and editing. It also looks to highlight those aspects of an image that add strength and structure to an image. Trying to get people to be more considered more mindful in their approach with the underlying principle being:

Develop your style

Take the images you like

Be the photographer you want to be

The evening is broken down into the following sections:

  1. Introduction

  2. Setting the aims

  3. Detailed analysis of two shoots from initial planning to a final image

  4. How to plan your shoot

  5. Stage by stage analysis of series of images looking at

    1. location

    2. narrative

    3. settings

    4. processing notes

    5. identification of opportunities and issues

    6. composition

    7. critical analysis

    8. final image

Each section is evaluated using my experiences and images as a platform for discussion. The talk will result in a lively and engaging evening.
